Job Description - Director Asphalt Technical Services (20001I0) Job Description Description Directs and manages the asphalt product technical activities throughout the asphalt supply chain. This includes QA/QC activities, trouble-shooting asphalt production issues at the refinery/terminal level, as well as implementing existing product technology enhancements, and new product technology development.

• Identifies, evaluates and develops new asphalt product technologies and enhancements of current products.
• Studies--influence and counsel FHWA officials, state DOT Design & Materials Engineers and other specifying agencies on new asphalt specifications, technologies and enhancements.
• Provides central management and coordination of all Product Technical Services activities, including purchased additives, between all marketing regions, refineries and terminals as well as field support to contractors and state agencies as needed, who are Valero's asphalt customers.
• Establishes strategic performance measures and initiatives for the department and manage the Product Technical Services team toward achieving such goals.
• Develops products that meet higher quality asphalt specifications and as required by customized or agency demand. Reduces cost of goods and increases product mix flexibility. Improves product quality in order to sell into the premium product markets.
• Addresses all inter-regional opportunities and issues in a unified manner in order to eliminate redundancies and inefficiencies and provides for consistent implementation of product development & execution plans.
• Coordinates with Valero HSE department regarding changing regulations affecting asphalt.
• Plans and presents formal and informal technical presentations to educate and lead agencies and customers as well as all groups within the asphalt supply chain.
• Assists VLO Crude Supply and P&E Departments to optimize crude selection for meeting required asphalt specifications while maintaining system economics.
• Advises product supply/production efforts between refinery and terminals to optimize asset utilization and ensures uninterrupted asphalt supply for customers.
• Optimizes and updates asphalt blend formulations to provide most economic solutions that meet specification.
• Coordinates quality aspects surrounding export opportunities and shipping of asphalt via water to terminals.
• Collects/oversees/coordinates all monthly submissions of QA/QC data and production reports to DOT Agencies. --This position is salaried exempt status, which means you are not eligible for overtime pay. Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or higher level degree in Science or Engineering required.
  • Bachelor's or higher level degree--in Chemistry or Engineering preferred.
  • 15--years of experience in the following area(s):--Dealing with petroleum refining, product development, marketing and sales, laboratory testing and product QA/QC required.
  • Travel up to 25% of time required.
  • Direct laboratory and/or production experience with asphalt preferred. Position level and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
