Job Description:
The Executive Director, under general direction, manages the
Center for Academic Innovation with the primary goal of improving
student success outcomes by providing faculty with professional
development, networking, and instructional innovation
opportunities. Serves as the primary advisor to the Provost on
issues related to innovative teaching and learning practices.
Represents the Provost to the faculty for issues related to
teaching and learning. Ensures that course instructors have access
to teaching professional development, training in state-of-the-art
teaching practices, and relevant instructional support equipment in
order to provide the highest quality instructional environment to
students. The successful candidate will be excited about teaching,
supportive of faculty development, and effective at building
coalitions and fostering a sense of community.
Included within the scope of the CAI's activities is A&M-San
Antonio's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), an integral component of
the SACSCOC reaffirmation of accreditation process. The QEP is
Connecting the Dots: Quantitative Reasoning.
Responsibilities:
- Designs, develops, deploys, and assesses innovative programs
that enable course instructors to thrive as excellent
teachers
- Promotes an inclusive educational experience for a diverse
student population by training instructors in equitable teaching
practices
- Identifies barriers to effective instruction and provides
recommendations to campus leadership
- Designs, develops, and delivers training to support the
effective teaching of gateway courses
- Works within the shared governance structure to provide
recommendations on the design, administration, assessment, and
continuous improvement of the core curriculum
- Assists the Provost and the President on initiatives related to
teaching and learning, including as a committee member, committee
chair, coordinator, or as assigned
- Ensures efficient and effective use of Center for Academic
Innovation (CAI) staff and resources, including the development and
oversight of faculty advisory boards
- Leads the development of CAI long-term and short-term goals and
objectives
- Sets unit and individual performance objectives, monitors and
adjusts, and evaluates outcomes leading to student success and
improvement
- Oversees CAI budgeting and fiscal operations
- Develops, directs, and evaluates CAI internal controls
- Directs the administration of University-wide programs and
initiatives
- Coordinates and maintains CAI working relationships with units
across the University
- Leads initiatives for training and professional development
sessions informed by faculty input and/or innovations in
pedagogical practices to support faculty and student
success
- Serves as the university's liaison to the Chancellor's Council
for Academic Technology and Innovative Education (CATIE)
- Continues deployment of and assesses the university's QEP,
Connecting the Dots: Quantitative Reasoning
- Collaborates with the SACSOC liaison on QEP update reports,
including the Fifth-Year Report (due in 2025)

Required Education and Experience:
- Master's degree in education, human development, instructional
design, or a related area; or master's degree in any discipline
combined with experience with teaching/learning excellence
initiatives.
- Ten (10) years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Terminal degree with experience with teaching/learning
excellence initiatives
- Two (2) years of experience at the Executive Director level at
institution of higher education working directly with learning
theory, learning management systems including Blackboard,
instructional design, instructional technologies, distance
learning, and educational assessment; college teaching experience;
experience with delivering professional development instruction;
and experience with deploying and assessing a quality enhancement
plan; experience at an HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution).
- Two (2) years of progressively responsible administrative
experience at an institution of higher education, including
experience with budget management and personnel supervision; higher
education teaching experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Learning theory, learning management systems including
Blackboard, instructional design, instructional technologies,
distance learning, and educational assessment.
- Multitask and work cooperatively across campus.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure
understanding.
