Director Public Relations and Community Experience – (00013313) Whataburger

Summary Description:  The Director, Community Experience and Public Affairs is an expert dedicated to building emotional and trusted connections with Whataburger’s 14 million Customers and 45,000 Family Members across our entire footprint. These connections humanize Whataburger as more than “just another restaurant.” By investing time, effort, and money into the causes that matter to the community, the Community Experience and Public Affairs team aims to create the kind of relationships that drive loyalty through shared values and make Whataburger a place where goodness lives. These relationships yield long-lasting business benefits for the brand as well as help drive sales and transactions over the long-term. On the Community Experience side, the director leads a team of managers, supervisors and coordinators who execute on these community goals through a variety of charitable giving, community relations programs, public relations, emergency/disaster response and activities and building relationships with nonprofits and community leaders. On the Public Affairs side, the director oversees the Public Relations team – leading corporate Whataburger efforts in the areas of proactive and reactive media relations, strategic public relations, external communications. The director would oversee the strategy and execution of effectively building and maintaining authentic relationships with media and supervise the the efforts and budget of the public relations agency of record to ensure it delivers excellent service and creates significant and measurable earned media and awareness for the brand. Specifically in the Public Affairs arena, the director would help build and deliver a strategy that proactively positions Whataburger in a positive light as a responsible corporate citizen and helps develop training programs for senior leadership that prepares them to serve on community boards and excel as community leaders. In addition, this public affairs strategy would ensure that Whataburger has trusted relationships and a stellar reputation with politicians, governments and influencers in a way that promotes brand awareness, but also provides the business with the benefits of local connections with influence in the real estate, finance and governmental sectors. Using both the Community and PR teams, the director helps build a strong public affairs strategy for the brand – training the team to be cross-functional experts in the areas of Community, Public Relations, Public Affairs and Media Relations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversees and directs the efforts of Whataburger’s PR agency to ensure strategies are consistent with those of Whataburger, and projects are implemented and objectives achieved on time and on budget.

Directs the efforts of Whataburger’s PR agency to create and pitch positive stories to the media.

Directs teams that respond to general and crisis media inquiries. Assists in preparing talking pointsf or corporate and restaurant management that are consistent with those shared with reporters, and coordinates and prepares spokespeople for interviews.

Develops networks and opportunities supporting active contact between Whataburger representatives, the media, community leaders, public officials and more.

Arranges public appearances for company representatives to increase product and service awareness and to promote the company’s brand. Helps promote the brand through positive press opportunities.

Develops process and procedures for Community Experience, Public Relations, and Public Affairs.

Develops and implements ongoing media training for Whataburger leadership, Field Brand Teams and Restaurant Teams.

Provides Community Relations and Media support for corporate and field marketing sponsorships.

Assists with the development of strategies for charitable giving throughout the areas served.

Develops Community Relations & Media programs and tools supporting the Field Marketers’ local store marketing efforts within all business units.

Prepares and presents ideas and recommendations to colleagues and upper management as assigned.

Prepares standard executive bios, corporate bios and special reports for senior management as assigned.

Assists in executing Employee Performance Reviews and program performance evaluations as assigned.

Qualifications EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Affairs, Community or Business related field required, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE:

10 years experience as project or program manager of major programs. PR agency experience preferred.

5-7 years experience supervising others at various organizational levels, preferably at a regional or higher level

Demonstrated advanced ability to communicate, influence and negotiate decisions while motivating staff

Demonstrated advanced ability to create and implement given strategic direction

Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment

KNOWLEDGE:

Proficiency in MS Office Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

Experience in public and media relations

Advanced professional or theoretical knowledge and functional concepts, practices and procedures of a particular field of specialization in the execution of assigned duties and responsibilities

Advanced understanding of the function’s structure and policies with an intermediate understanding of the structure and policies of Whataburger Restaurants LLC

Advanced understanding of budgetary concepts and procedures

Advanced ability to implement given strategic direction

Advanced understanding of performance review process

Advanced understanding of portfolio management: input to output, decision making process, logical sequence of activities, interdependencies between activities/tasks, deliverable prioritization and timeline

WORKING CONDITIONS/TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Exempt Family Members are expected to work the necessary time to satisfactorily fulfill job responsibilities

Must be able to report to work timely and as required by operational/business needs

Must be able to work a full-time schedule with a minimum of 40 hours per work week

Must be able to travel occasionally

Working conditions exist to satisfactorily fulfill job responsibilities
