Software Engineer II (Binary/Malware/Forensic Analyst)

Responsibilities

Primary Tasks

Binary Analysis Perform analysis on software for which we do not have source code (binary analysis) using an automated toolchain/framework Analyze results and report findings, potential impacts and potential mitigation steps (when available/known) Software Development Develop software/scripts to enable the automation of binary analysis Sustain current and future codebase (specific to the binary analysis capability) Capability Development Ensure current capability is active and available at all times Maintain current tool list Research additional tools/processes to bridge gaps and integrate when appropriate/approved Deploy, navigate, and demonstrate automated binary analysis toolchain Assist in research and development in the Software Assurance space

Secondary/Support Tasks:

General administrative: Attend meetings, briefs, working groups as necessary to expand capability and/or contribute to the DoD community (as approved) Brief TSN mission, capabilities, project status, and results as necessary Support to rest of team (in case someone is out/position is empty for an extended time): Software Development - Development/sustainment of two organic web applications Static Code Analysis - Conduct analysis and report findings, potential impacts and potential mitigation steps (when available/known) System Security Engineering (SSE) (on ad hock basis dependent on availability and current workload): Conduct engineering and program protection document reviews focusing on software assurance techniques Finish

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Technologies:
  • Language(s):
  • Be able to develop in: Assembly, Python, Terraform/Ansible
  • Be familiar with (can read): object oriented languages (C/C++, Java, etc.), HTML, CSS
  • Linux and Windows OS
  • Databases: both SQL and non-SQL based
  • Containers and containerization practices (Docker, Kubernetes, Hardening, etc.)
  • Microsoft Office tool suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Rudimentary (prefer intermediate or higher) understanding of malware detection, malicious indicators of compromise, and/or reverse engineering tools
  • Software scripting/development experience
  • Knowledge of cyber countermeasures and mitigations
  • Intermediate understanding of software assurance and/or software security
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal guidance for most tasks
  • Ability to work in close collaboration with other team members

Nice to have:

  • Technologies:
  • Language(s): GO, JavaScript, Java
  • Frameworks/libraries: React, Spring Boot, AngularJS, SASS, Hibernate ORM, Material UI (React/Angular versions), NodeJS and NPM Maven, Spring Repositories
  • Blue/Red/Purple team experience
  • Understanding of adversarial attack behaviors (malicious attacks)
  • Experience in identifying malware via reverse engineering or other methods

Additional Information:

  • Currently in a telework situation, but will need to be able to go into the office as necessary. (This may be changing in the future dependent on ever-changing COVID policies.)
  • Travel may be required in the future to attend Technical Exchange Meetings (TEMs), working groups, and/or community of practice meetings (again this depends on COVID policies and the scheduling of in-person events).

Minimum Recommended Education/Experience Requirements: BA/BS, 10 years of experience in the respective technical/professional discipline being performed, of which 3 years must be in the DoD, or 15 years of directly related experience, 5 of which must be in the DoD
