Salary Range: Up to $50,000 annualized, based on 20 hours per week, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Hours: 20 hours per week, exempt.

    Essential Functions

    To assist Principal Investigators, postdocs, and graduate students in the department with Bioinformatics/Data Analytics support on their scientific projects. The ideal candidate for this position is expected to have experience in genomic data analysis, particularly next-generation genome sequencing data whole genome sequencing, exome sequencing, ChIP, Cut & Run, ATAC, Whole Genome Bisulfite, and RNA sequencing from both bulk and single-cell datasets.

    Core Responsibilities
  • Collaborates and works with multiple labs/groups within the department.
  • Creates and maintains data analysis pipelines for common NGS tasks.
  • Integrates data to genome browsers such as IGV and/or UCSC for data visualization.
  • Creates RNA-seq analysis for model organisms (bulk, single-cell, and spatial datasets).
  • Constructs RNA-seq analysis for non-model organisms (familiarity with Trinity and/or de novo transcriptome prediction algorithms preferred but not required).
  • Creates network/Co-expression analysis to identify co-expressed/potentially co-regulated genes.
  • Creates and maintains chromatin accessibility analyses (ATAC-seq, bulk, and single-cell) and motif analysis.
  • Establishes Multi-ome data integration and analysis for bulk and single-cell datasets.
  • Integrates multiple epigenomic profiling datasets using ChromHMM or similar analysis.
  • Enforces Genome assembly from Illumina and long-read sequencing datasets (PacBio and nanopore, preferred but not necessary).
  • Maintains data visualization and generation of figures from omics data.
  • Maintains knowledge of the latest bioinformatic approaches and genomic technologies and implements where appropriate.
  • Benchmarks tools/pipelines and optimization of pipelines to run on HPC environments.
  • Conducts tutorials and/or workshops for graduate students and postdocs on data analysis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Required Qualifications
    • Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Data Analytics, Computer Science, or Biological Sciences.
    • Prior work experience with major bioinformatic pipelines and relevant statistical methods.
    • Prior experience in version control of common pipelines on platforms like GitHub.
    • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills.
    • Ability to work with data from multiple sources.
    • Knowledge of data analysis and research design methodologies.
    • Demonstrated independent decision-making and problem-solving ability.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
      Preferred Qualifications
      • PhD in a related field.
      • Prior experience with cloud storage-based data integration for visualization on UCSC and/or IGV genome browsers.
      • Prior experience with AI/ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and/or Scikit-learn.
      • Prior experience working in a high-performance computing cluster infrastructure.
      • Experience programming skills in Java, and familiarity with database management (SQL and/or Oracle).
      • Knowledge of DNA-seq variant calling (familiarity with GATK toolkit preferred but not necessary).

          Working Environment:
          • Office environment.
          • Requires use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
          • Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events.
          • Occasional after hours and weekend work or overtime may be required.
            Physical Demands:
            • Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary, if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.
            • Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.


              This position will require working both remotely in Texas and on campus (approximately five or more days on campus per month). Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.
